LED light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light to gently support natural processes within the skin at a cellular level. Rather than targeting specific structures with heat or mechanical energy, LED works by delivering light energy that the skin’s cells absorb and convert into biological activity. This process, known as photobiomodulation, may assist the skin’s ability to repair, regenerate, and calm itself from within.
The treatment is painless, requires no recovery time, and is suitable for almost all skin types. LED light therapy is used primarily as an adjunctive treatment. It is offered alongside other procedures to support recovery, reduce post-treatment inflammation, and help optimise outcomes, rather than as a primary standalone treatment.
What does it treat?
LED light therapy is a gentle, supporting option for a range of skin concerns, best understood as one component of a broader treatment plan rather than a primary intervention. Different wavelengths are used depending on the treatment goal.
Red light, typically in the 630 to 660 nanometre range, may support collagen activity in the dermis and has recognised anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for reducing redness, calming sensitised skin, and supporting post-procedure recovery. Any improvements in fine lines or skin firmness through red light alone tend to be modest and gradual.
Near-infrared light, at around 830 nanometres, penetrates more deeply and is particularly useful for inflammation and tissue repair, well suited to supporting recovery following more intensive treatments.
Blue light, at approximately 415 nanometres, targets the bacteria associated with inflammatory acne. It is used as a supporting measure within an acne management programme rather than as a definitive acne treatment.
What does the treatment feel like?
LED light therapy is a very comfortable treatment. Patients lie beneath a panel delivering the appropriate wavelengths, and the experience is generally described as warm and relaxing. There is no sensation of heat, pain, or pressure. Eye protection is worn throughout.
What is the recovery like?
There is no recovery time associated with LED light therapy. Patients can return to normal activities, including applying makeup, immediately after treatment.
What aftercare is required?
No specific aftercare is required. Standard skincare practice applies, including daily broad-spectrum SPF use. There are no activity restrictions.
How long does a session take?
A standard LED session takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
When used as an adjunct to other treatments, LED sessions are scheduled as part of the broader treatment plan with timing guided by the primary procedure being used.
For those using LED for general skin health or acne management, a course of 6 to 10 sessions spaced once or twice per week is a general starting point. Improvement is gradual and modest. Periodic maintenance sessions can be considered after an initial course.
