A chemical peel is a skin treatment in which a solution containing one or more exfoliating acids is applied to the skin surface. The solution accelerates the natural shedding of the outermost layers of the skin, promoting cell renewal and revealing fresher, more even skin beneath. Peels vary in depth and formulation, and the most appropriate option depends on the patient’s skin type, concern, and tolerance.
What does it treat?
Chemical peels are effective for uneven skin tone, mild to moderate sun damage and pigmentation, fine surface lines, acne-prone and congested skin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and dullness or lack of radiance. They are frequently used in combination with laser treatments to extend and maintain improvement.
What types of peels are available?
Peels at Aecera are selected based on individual skin type and concern. Glycolic and lactic acid combinations are used for ageing, pigmentation, and general skin renewal in patients with normal to dry skin types. Salicylic and mandelic acid formulations are used for oily, congested, and acne-prone skin. Phytic acid and botanical combinations suit sensitive skin. Higher concentration glycolic formulations at lower pH are available for patients with more resilient skin seeking a stronger treatment.
How long does a session take?
A chemical peel appointment typically takes 30 to 45 minutes including preparation, application, and post-treatment care.
What is the recovery like?
Following superficial peels, redness and mild sensitivity are typical for 24 to 48 hours, and the skin may feel dry or tight. Visible peeling is not guaranteed with every peel and is not necessary for improvement to occur. Where peeling does occur, it generally begins two to three days after treatment and resolves within one to seven days.
What aftercare is required?
A mild moisturiser and daily broad-spectrum SPF are essential, and direct sun exposure should be avoided. Active skincare ingredients should be withheld until the skin has fully recovered. Makeup can be applied on the same day of treatment if needed. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for two to three days. Full aftercare instructions will be provided at your appointment.
What does the treatment feel like?
During a chemical peel, most patients experience a tingling, mild stinging, or warming sensation as the solution is applied. The sensation varies depending on the peel type and individual skin sensitivity. The solution is applied for a controlled period before being neutralised and removed.
Preparing for a peel
In the three to five days immediately before the appointment, active skincare products should be paused to avoid excessive sensitivity. Sun exposure and other facial procedures should be avoided in the days before treatment. Patients should come to the appointment with a clean face. Patients currently using isotretinoin should not undergo chemical peels.
How many treatments will I need?
A course of three to six peels spaced two to four weeks apart is typically recommended for meaningful improvement. Peels are frequently used as maintenance following laser procedures.
